Itinerary

An Expedition Beyond the Map At Native Trails, we believe the best journeys are measured in heartbeats, not miles. This adventure plunges you into the raw, untamed soul of Assam - a land where mighty rivers carve stories through ancient forests, where the one-horned rhinoceros roams freely, and where the great Brahmaputra itself becomes your highway. Over five adrenaline-charged days, you will paddle through the golden mist of the Brahmaputra at dawn, sleep beneath a cathedral of stars on sandbars in the middle of the river, chase white water down the Bar Nadi rapids, and be welcomed as a guest into living traditions that have endured for centuries. This is not a tour. This is a transformation. Day 1 - Into the Wild Kingdom Guwahati Airport to Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary The adventure begins the moment you land. Your Native Trails team waits at arrivals, ready to sweep you into a world where traffic signs give way to animal tracks. Pobitora holds the world's highest concentrations of one-horned rhinoceros - when you lock eyes with one of these prehistoric giants, you'll understand what it means to be truly humbled by the wild. PROGRAMME Morning - Airport Meet & Greet Arrive at Guwahati Airport. Welcomed by the Native Trails team. A hearty breakfast to fuel the adventures ahead. Mid-Morning - Drive to Pobitora Scenic drive through lush Assam countryside to Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary. Check in, freshen up, and feel the jungle breathing around you. Late Morning - Birdwatching Expedition Pobitora's wetlands are a birder's paradise. Spot rare migratory species, waders, and raptors in the stillness of the sanctuary. Afternoon - Jeep Safari - The Great Rhino Encounter Thrilling jeep safari through tall elephant grass. The one-horned rhinoceros stands mere metres away. A truly humbling encounter. Sunset - Chanaka Beach Visit A trip to the pristine beaches of Chanaka - your first glimpse of the great Brahmaputra. Evening - Bihu Performance (Optional) Witness Assam's most vibrant cultural tradition - the Bihu dance in all its rhythmic, colourful glory. Night - Dinner & Overnight at Pobitora Settle in, lulled by the sounds of the sanctuary. Tomorrow, the river calls. Day 2 - Mystic Mayong & The Living River Pobitora - Mayong - Brahmaputra Sandbank Today takes you from the realm of ancient wildlife into a world even more mysterious - Mayong, once known as the Black Magic Capital of the World. Tantric manuscripts, tribal rituals, and a royal lineage older than memory. Then, as afternoon light turns amber, you take to the water. Tonight you camp on a sandbank in the middle of the Brahmaputra. The fire crackles, the stars ignite, and the only sound is the river whispering past your tent. Some nights simply cannot be described. PROGRAMME Morning - Mayong Museum Discover the dark arts and ancient wisdom of Mayong - rare tantric texts, ritual objects, and artefacts from a time when this village commanded both reverence and fear. Mid-Morning - Audience with the King of Mayong A rare meeting with the living descendant of Mayong's ancient royal lineage. A conversation that bridges centuries. Noon - Traditional Assamese Lunch Taste the special traditional Assamese cuisines like bamboo shoot curries, khar, fritters, chutneys and tenga anjas - eat like the land itself is feeding you. Afternoon - Kayaking Briefing & Launch Gear up, load the country boat, pull the anchor. The moment the current takes hold of your kayak, you are no longer a tourist - you are an explorer. Late Afternoon - Sunset Kayaking on the Brahmaputra Paddle into gold. The Brahmaputra sunsets are legendary - a sky that burns crimson over endless water. Evening - Sandbank Campfire & Barbeque Set up tents on untouched sandbars. A bonfire roars to life. Barbeque smoke drifts through the river air. Unplugged music under the stars. Night - Overnight on the Brahmaputra Sleep to the sound of the river flowing by, in the middle of one of Asia's greatest waterways. Day 3 - The River Remembers Everything Brahmaputra Sandbank - Downstream - Guwahati Wake before the world does. The Brahmaputra at dawn is something sacred - mist rising off the water, the first birds breaking the silence, a sky still deciding between night and day. You launch into this, a single kayak on an ancient river. Today you flow downstream toward Guwahati. Keep your eyes on the water - the Xihu, the endangered Gangetic river dolphin, is known to appear in these stretches. Fewer than 600 exist. If the river chooses to show you one, consider yourself among the fortunate. PROGRAMME Pre-Dawn - Dawn Wake-Up on the Sandbank Rise to silence broken only by the river. Strong Assamese tea with traditional snacks as the sun paints the sky. Early Morning - Morning River Paddle Launch onto the Brahmaputra as morning mist dissolves. Flow downstream past fishing villages, waving children, and silhouetted farmers. Morning - River Dolphin Watch Paddle quietly. Watch the surface. The Xihu breaks the water with a soft exhale - one of nature's rarest encounters Mid-Morning - Sandbank Breakfast Stop Pull ashore on a remote sandbank for a picnic breakfast. Explore vast agricultural river islands. Midday - Come Ashore & Freshen Up The river ride ends. Head to a nearby resort for a shower and a sumptuous lunch. Afternoon - Return to Guwahati Back to the city. Explore local eateries, craft markets, and pubs. The city hums with an energy electric after two days of river silence. Day 4 - Conquer the Rapids, Own the Night Guwahati - Bogamati - Rafting - Trekking - Stargazing Today belongs to those who crave the edge. The drive to Bogamati takes you through the city, through small towns, and then out into raw wilderness. You don't walk in - you zipline over the rushing Bar Nadi river with white water roaring below your feet. That's just the entrance. What follows is 7km of river rafting through some of the most beautiful landscapes in Northeast India. And when darkness falls, the real show begins: a sky full of stars, unpolluted and infinite, arching over the jungle canopy. PROGRAMME Morning - Drive to Bogamati (3 hours) Watch the city dissolve into countryside, then jungle. The anticipation builds with every kilometre. Late Morning - Zipline Arrival over Bar Nadi No road to the camp - you arrive by zipline over the rushing river. Heart pounding, wind in your face, white water below. Noon - River Rafting - 7km on the Bar Nadi Two hours of exhilarating white water through rapids, grasslands, and forested banks. Shout into the rapids. Get soaked. Early Afternoon - Freshen Up & Lunch Return to camp, rinse off the river, and sit down to a well-earned meal. Afternoon - Jungle Trek (1.5 hrs) Trek through Bogamati's forest trails. Birdsong, dappled light, the occasional rustle in the undergrowth. Evening - Bonfire, Barbeque & Music As dusk settles over the forest, the fire is lit. Barbeque aromas, music, laughter, stories from the day. Night - Stargazing at Bogamati Lie back and watch the universe reveal itself. No light pollution. Just the Milky Way stretched from horizon to horizon. Day 5 - The River Stays With You Bogamati - Guwahati - Farewell All great expeditions must end. But the gushing river gives you one final morning by the river, where cold water rushes over your feet and the forest hums its goodbye in a language that needs no translation. You'll stack your pebbles on the river shore - a small, ancient human ritual of marking a place that marked you. Then the road back to Guwahati. Something will be different. Something always is, after a river. PROGRAMME Morning - Relaxed Breakfast at Bogamati No alarms. No rush. Savour the last moments of wilderness before returning to city life. Mid-Morning - River Beach Farewell Walk the beautiful river beach. Wade into icy crystal-clear water. Stack stones on the shore in silent tribute to the journey. Afternoon - Return to Guwahati The drive back through the countryside. You watch the rivers, the fields, the light on the water differently now.
